Mexico Recap

This trip went much faster than the rest ever have! I think we are getting to a better age with the kids--Keira is beyond the point of caring when we go (she loves her aunt Val and daycare lol), and Garett is excited for us to come back and give him his presents and hear about all of our adventures and see pictures of the beach. Everytime we facetimed, he was SO taken with the view from our room of the pool and ocean, he always said "Oh my Gosh! That's the best!!!" haha. Makes it a little easier on us to leave!

On March 12, after dinner, we dropped Garett off with my mother-in-law. He had a sleepover at her house that night, and Val came to our house to sleep, since we had to be on the road around 6:50AM, so we couldn't bring Keira to daycare.

The bags were packed and ready by the door, the instructions were out and the fridge and cupboards were beyond stocked. We were ready. The other couple we went with picked us up on the 13th just before 7AM, and we got to the airport, and got to go into the expedited lanes, since they are both military and allowed to bring a guest each lol, so we saved a lot of time there. We had a quick breakfast, and boarded the plane.

The flight was longer than they anticipated on the way there, so when we finally got our luggage, and to our transfer SUV, we were about 20 minutes later than anticipated (in the grand scheme of things, not a bad delay lol). We had pre-ordered two corona each for the ride (can't go wrong at $1 a beer), and we got there pretty quickly.

Upon arrival, a fruity cocktail and a cool towel. Our rooms were ready for us right away, so off we went to unpack and settle in.

Night one was all about exploration. The resort was really small, but beautiful and everyone was very friendly. There was also an abundance of activities that kept us entertained (always some sort of live entertainment/band and some kind of group activity). The rooms were always immaculate--housekeeping came twice a day, and then turn down service at night. We ate at the buffet that evening (it was BBQ theme night, which was pretty tasty). We went to the disco to listen to the "top 40's" band that was playing. We "people watched" to see who we could maybe be friends with for the week. We met a nice couple, and talked to them for quite some time. We were in bed around 1:30AM, after ordering some club sandwiches from room service.

The next day we went on a trip over to Secrets Maroma (we were staying at Secrets Capri), for the UVC presentation. We didn't upgrade since we are happy with our package, and they were very rude to our guests, so we ended up walking away empty handed all around.  We each purchased a bottle of wine when we got back to the resort, which bought us a private table to watch The Beatles tribute show that evening. It was such a hoot. The band was so-so, but what was hilarious is all of the acrobatic acts over the water, and the stage of break dancers/ contortionists in the middle of the pool. It was so distracting. What a weirdly entertaining show LOL. We went to the "lounge/disco" again that evening and met a few more people to chat with. Jami and I danced a little bit. We went to bed around midnight.

Up and at 'em fairly early the following morning. We ate breakfast on the beach, and watched the ocean, followed by Archery lessons. I was rocking it until my last turn when the bungee part flicked my arm--I was pretty bruised on the inside of my elbow for the rest of the trip lol. We played a little beach volleyball afterwards, and then lounged on the beach with some mango margaritas for a few hours. When we were sufficiently crisp, we went into one of the restaurants for lunch.

That night, it was just tyler and I for dinner, so we went to the Japanese restaurant for some Asian food and sushi. It was great, aside from waiting FOREVER for our food. They must have been understaffed, because it took so so so long that some people got up and left. It was about 8:45 PM before our supper arrived. Afterwards, we went upstairs to the lobby bar for a cocktail, and the pastry chef had a big spread out on the lobby, so we sampled a few of those things!

The next morning, we were up early again, and I went to feed the turtles they have in the big pond in the lobby (about 45 turtles on location!). We were upgraded to an ocean view room, so we went back to our room and packed, and they moved our stuff and we unpacked quickly. Much better!! And the balcony overlooked the pool, so we never had to buy dinner show tickets again. We could watch from the comfort of our robes LOL. This was a pool day for us. We ate the buffet they had out daily pool side, and hammered back a whole bunch of Coca-Cola's. That evening, we met a few Coati (Mexican raccoons that look like a mix between a fox and an ant-eater that are SO friendly), and ate at the steakhouse restaurant. It was not great. Afterwards, we went into the main building to the coffee bar--where they pour you a coffee, and warm up the alcohol of your choice over a flame, and add whipped cream. I loved this coffee station lol. We went back to the other couples room and played lots of Euchre until about 2 AM.

The following morning (we are on March 17 now), we took a taxi into Playa del Carmen and did a BUNCH of shopping and ate lunch at the most authentic Mexican restaurant (it was a DIVE, lol) and then went down by the Ferry's and sat at the Palapabar and had a few cheap beers, watched the boats, walked along the beach, and had some very expensive ice cream before we cabbed back to the resort. That evening was a comedic act--the boys thought he was hilarious, but Jami and I zoned out and talked instead as soon as the guy started rubbing oil on himself and getting into a giant balloon. Not. Funny. After his show was done, it was disco time. Jami and I stayed up late (1 AM) and danced like crazy while the boys had some stogies outside the doors.

The next morning, we were up bright and early for a quick breakfast, before our van picked us up. We went straight to the ruins of Tulum for a 45 minute guided tour, and then some time to walk around to the top of the mountain on our own. We walked back to the meeting place, had a cheap beer, and relaxed in the shade before we loaded back up to go to lunch at a ranch. After lunch, we went ATV'ing through the rockiest place I've ever been. This was about 1.5 hours, and it was HARD work!! They weren't lying when they said this course wasn't for beginners. There was one first timer with us, and they moved her to the back of the 6 of us, and she was probably 45 minutes behind.

After we finished that, we all changed and hiked down into the underworld lol. We swam in the underground caves for a while, learning about the incredible history of these places. This is something I have always wanted to do, but let fear stand in the way. I sucked it up and went, and I am so glad I did. It was amazing. One of my goals for 2018 was to do more things that scare me! CHECK.

When we got out, we dried off, and asked our driver to make a stop on the hour long ride home at an inner city grocery hut. We needed to grab some snacks for the diabetic with us, and we grabbed some chips and pop for us as well. That night we ate at Portofino (the Italian restaurant) and it was amazing! THE best food I may have ever eaten.

After dinner, we went to watch a 1960's quartet sing, which was also amazing. So we stayed and had a few drinks before we went to bed around midnight.

The next morning (the 19th), Tyler and I ate brunch on the beach (this is where I got the call about my promotion), and then we took a 20 minute walk up the beach to Tres Rios (where the three rivers meet the ocean). It was beautifully crystal clear, and had kayaks you could take into the mangrove type areas, or you could swim in it. We just swam for a short period because the current was fairly strong that day, and it was very very deep in spots, so tired us out fast. We walked back and lounged around the pool with lunch again and swam in the pool a little bit. We went back upstairs to get changed for dinner, which was Italian again :) While we were getting ready, there was a sax player opening for the Il Divo tribute show. He was amazing. I took a few videos of him. It was just a magical looking evening.  This was our last night. After dinner, we went back to the room pretty early and packed up.

On the 20th, we woke up and packed the rest of our stuff for the concierge to grab our bags, went downstairs to the buffet for breakfast and checked out. Our transfer picked us up around 9:30, and we went through all of the security at the airport and sat down for a snack at Johnny Rockets before boarding the plane. It was a bit choppy on the way home, but I think it's because it was such a fast route--we were 30 mins early on arrival. We went through security, and grabbed some mcdonalds and tims and headed home. It was about 8:30PM when we got home, and a sleepy Garett was up to greet us :) I got some cuddles and kisses in and then we all went to bed. Tyler drove val home, and we were out for the night.

Another one for the books!!
