Cancun, MX Feb 24-Mar 3 2019 RECAP

On Saturday February 23, we dropped the kids off at Shannon and Casey's house very quickly in the evening (around 6:00, I would say). We went home, ate a quick snack and were not long out of bed.

We were up at 3:15 AM on Sunday to load up the truck, and head to the park and fly. Our plane was on time, and we headed to the de-icing bay. However, shortly after de-icing, the pilot came on the intercom and announced that the weather had taken a turn for the worse and we would be heading back to the gate to wait for a new flight schedule.

We sat for a few minutes, and he came back and told us that the freezing rain has momentarily stopped, so we will deice the wings again quickly and get out before it starts again...and that's what we did.

It was a bit of a bumpy take off (very) and the first 20 minutes or so until we reached altitude was bumpy. The seatbelt sign was on for the first 35-40 minutes and then it was a perfect flight, I even napped a bit!

All in all, we ended up landing about 20 minutes late, and easily breezed through security, and found our transfer. We thought we were travelling with another couple when we booked our transfer, so we had ordered EIGHT coronas and had lots of cool cloths to use. The Ford Explorer they sent was brand new and the driver was great--he played all of my favourite music :) The ride was about 25 minutes to the resort, and we managed to drink 5 beers between us lol.

We checked in around 4:00, and brought our stuff to our room

The view from our room was HORRIBLE (haha)

And since we are members of the Unlimited Vacation club, they left our banners on the door, and left a note and a cheesecake for Tyler for his birthday that had gone by three weeks before lol

We changed into our swim stuff and went to the swim up bar for a bit, and then left to get ready for dinner. We ate at the Mexican restaurant on the patio. We had some ceviched sea bass, stuffed mushrooms with fried grasshoppers and flank steak.

After dinner, we went to check out the Oscars party for a few minutes, and went for a short walk up the block.

On Monday, we were up very early (like 6:30), went for an early breakfast at the buffet, and walked up the road for a few kilometers to check out the area.

We had a "snack" at the ceviche bar, beachside. I say snack because the portions were so so tiny that we would have had to order 10 dishes to make one meal. So we headed to the Mediterranean restaurant (Olio) and had some mushroom quesadillas, more flank steak and cheesecake.

We rolled ourselves out of the restaurant and went for a stroll around the resort to see everything. We went and did our UVC update meeting. We went upstairs for a nap afterwards. When we woke up, we got dressed and went to the Lobby bar for a drink and off to Portofino (the Italian restaurant) for dinner. We had some fried cheese, beef carpaccio, mushroom risotto, filet mignons and a sauvignon blanc. We have never in our lives received such good service and food, so we put in a comment with the restaurant Manager. After we left there, we walked down to the beach bar area and had a drink on the swings, went back up to the main area to watch a break dancing show and closed the disco down this night (it closes at 1AM). We went for a short stroll on the beach also (they kept it pretty well lit). We were in bed around 1:45. This was our late night lol

On Tuesday, we woke up around 9:00, grabbed a quick breakfast at the buffet and went to book our activities for the week. We sat in the lobby being sloths for 2 hours (Tyler did some work). When we managed to move, we went and grabbed some chairs on the beach, floated in the ocean, lounged/tanned for a bit. We ate lunch at the barefoot grill (burgers) and finally went upstairs for a nap around 2:00. We got up around 5:00, got dressed and headed to dinner at Bordeaux (French). We had French onion soup, scallops, New York steak with mashed potatoes, salmon and root veggie mix and crème brulee. We walked around and listened to some live music, facetimed my parents and watched some Harry Potter before heading to bed around 9:30 lol

Wednesday we slept in until 8:00, grabbed a coffee (frozen coffee for me) and a spot on the beach under a nice wooden umbrella. We perched here for much of the morning. Stopped and had an early lunch at Olio since it was right next to us almost (shrimp cocktail, club sandwiches, brownies), napped on the beach afterwards, swam a bit and went to get ready pretty early since we had to grab a taxi out around 5:00. We headed to the Jolly Roger Pirate Show. We had some flavoured water drinks and walked around on-site when we got there, chatted with Shan and the kids to show them the boat, etc. The show started on time, and then we all marched on board, took a picture with the captain and settled in for the show. They did part 1, then we headed below deck for dinner (surf and turf, pasta, rice, veggies, potatoes, etc) and  back up top for the second part of the show. Then there was a dance party on the way back to port. We got back around 9:45 and decided to take the bus back to the resort (since they wanted $16 USD to drive us maybe 5 blocks and the bus was $1USD lol) It was a quick ride, went up to the room and watched a bit of Netflix and went to bed! (see, we are getting old--all we want to do on vacation is sleep haha)

Thursday we were up early (6:45) to catch our shuttle to the marina. We boarded our catamaran with about 20 other people. They stopped in a spot on the edge of the reef to snorkel for about 30 minutes. Then stopped at another spot maybe 1 km off the coast of Isla Mujeres to swim. We had a bento box style lunch (and it was some of the best food I ate on this trip lol) fresh kiwi, a jerk chicken pasta salad, cornbread, chips and guacamole and a turkey/cheese panini. We docked and grabbed a golf cart to drive up the coast. Stopped in at a Sea Turtle farm, at a lookout to watch people ziplining over the ocean, stopped at a place called "the joint" for a few Sol beers, shopped and ate at the restaurant at dock 7 where we had fish tacos (omg yum) and another Sol before boarded the catamaran back. We sat at a table in the back with a few Americans we met and visited all the way back/added each other to facebook.
We got back to the resort around 2:00, sat in the lobby bar while Ty did a business call, had some mudslides, went out to the swim up bar and made a few more friends. That closed at 6:00, so we went up to change and went to Himitsu (Japanese) for dinner. We had some kelp salad, dumplings, chicken satay with a peanut sauce, a few different Nigiri (tuna, crab) and a number of different sushi rolls. For dessert we had tempura ice cream and banana spring rolls. We watched some of the "retro" show, but it was a bit too retro for us, so we went to bed around 9:00.

Friday we were up around 7, went for breakfast and claimed our Bali bed we rented for the day. We swam in the ocean and relaxed all day. The bed came with our own personal butler, and a bottle of sparkling wine (he brought us a bunch of juice so we could make mimosas). We had some lunch (fish fillets, ribs and potatoes), napped on the bali bed, and decided to grab a quick dinner at 6:00 since we had tickets to go to Now Jade and watch the Broadway Rock of Ages show. We started rushing through dinner and realized it was almost an hour ride there, and wouldn't be back until after midnight. We decided to ditch out on Rock of Ages, and enjoy our meal (caprese salad, carpaccio, beef ravioli and filet mignon). It happened to be Mexican Night, so we watched some mariachi music and dancing, shopped at the nighttime market they set up, and sat in the Lobby Bar to watch their performer. We stayed up a bit later this night, ordered some room service (chicken soup and fajitas) and went to bed lol

Saturday we woke up around 9 and called the kids. We went for a long walk up the road, and stopped at a big market/mall and did our shopping. It was very hot this day so we made our way back, sat in the room and checked into our flights. We grabbed some beach chairs and relaxed-we met a couple from Vancouver Island next to us. We had some lunch ocean-side (burgers and hot dogs) and swam a lot. Soaking it all in. We went to the Japanese restaurant again this night because it was so delicious. Afterwards we sat on the patio of the lobby bar, and went in once the singers started. We watched a bit of a wedding, and drank a number of "Dreams Sands" drinks.

Sunday was home day! I was pretty happy to go home. I was sick of everything at this point-sleeping, drinking, eating and my body was feeling pretty crappy.

We woke up and packed the rest of our stuff, and checked out. We stopped for our last breakfast in a private room overlooking the activity pool and our Explorer arrived around 9:15. We got to the airport by 9:45, and whizzed through security. We did a bit more shopping at duty free, and walked around the airport listening to their live bands and people-watching.

Our gate was changed since the west jet flight to Vancouver was delayed (saw the couple we met from Vancouver island when they came over to that gate). We managed to still take off on time, and got to Ottawa about 25 minutes early (thank you jet stream).

Shan and Casey had packed the kids and brought them home and ordered pizza. We were so glad to be home! The kids had fun, but have not stopped clinging to me since lol Lots of cuddles ensued and an early night to bed was had by all :)
