Small Getaway- Niagara Falls & Buffalo, NY
Last week (June 6), Ty and I headed out on a road trip. We returned home on June 8, so it was a quick time away!
On Thursday June 6, as soon as the kids woke up, we loaded up the truck and headed to Cornwall to drop the littles off at my parents house for 2 nights. We headed out and stopped at Walmart for some road snacks and a case of water as well as some greasy McDonald's breakfast (definitely saw my dad and Garett pull into the parking lot before we even left town lol).
We crossed over in Cornwall, with zero wait at the border. The BSO asked us about the kids we left behind (noticing the car seats in the back lol).
We only stopped once for a bio-break , and then drove straight to Niagara Falls, NY. We parked in a big lot, and walked down to the Maid of the Mist for the 20 minute boat ride (not a ton of pictures or video since it was SO wet). Once we were done, we grabbed a few souvenirs (a personalized magnet, a shot glass and a snow globe thing).
Once we were done there, we walked up the hill a bit to the Rainforest Café, which is a place I wanted to go badly!! The entire place is decked out like a rainforest, the animals move and make sounds, and every 30 minutes, there's a thunderstorm. Very cool. And the food was AMAZING. I had pork carnitas (tacos) and Ty had a trio of steak, chicken and shrimp. It was all delicious. He had a beer and I had a mixed drink (if you pay $11.99, you keep the glasses and also you get extremely discounted refills, which we didn't do, but we did buy the glasses). We split an icecream/whipped cream/brownie volcano that came with a song and a sparkler (by split, I mean totally wasted--10 people could have eaten that!).
We headed out from there and drove the 20 miles or so to downtown Buffalo, and checked into the hotel. We were too full for dinner, so we just walked around and explored a bit before we settled into "Local Kitchen & Beer Bar" for the night. We arrived there around 6:00, and stayed until they closed at 11:00. While we were here, we also ate a meal-Tyler had some specialty poutine, we had some buffalo wings and a cauliflower crust pizza with spinach, gorgonzola cheese, caramelized onions and balsamic glaze (yum). We listened to some live music, and then headed to hear a few songs across the street before we headed back to the hotel around midnight. We soaked in the tub and watched an episode of Game of Thrones (the laptop connected to the TV and streamed through Crave TV lol).
Friday morning we were up and walking around. We were told to go to a place called Betty's, so we walked the 2km to Betty's for some delicious brunch with mimosas. Afterwards, we went to change, sat in the lobby, and went to the Buffalo & Fort Erie County Naval and Military Park/Museum. We walked around the museum a bit before hoping onto the USS Sullivans (the first boat), which connected by a bridge to the USS Little Rock, and then connected to a submarine (I cant remember the name). On board the Sullivan boat, I discovered my debilitating fear of going DOWN ladders through a small hole. NOPE. I actually cried like a 2 year old lol. I walked around and saw as much as I could without going down any ladders, and what I did see was very cool! I exited the boat and Tyler went through the rest on his own while I found a bench along the water in the shade :)
Once he was out, we stopped in at the restaurant on the harbour, and had a quick bite.I can't remember the restaurant name, but it was so good, I wish we had eaten there more! We split some crab tostadas and truffle/parmesan fries.
We headed back to the hotel to change again, and we drove to Kleinhan's Music Hall for the Hanson: String Theory concert. As I looked around the eclectic mix of people, I wasn't sure what the concert would be like. They played with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and it was AMAZING to say the least. The first song that played had Tyler and I both tearing up, it was so moving, and perfectly arranged. Good on them! 25 years later and they still give me chills!
Afterwards, it was about 10:30 when we got back to the hotel, so we went across to an Asian-fusion restaurant "Waves." Where we feasted on sushi, crab cakes, pot stickers and had a single drink lol. We went back to the room, watched some GoT and hit the hay.
Saturday morning we slept in until about 7:45. We went to the 2nd floor for breakfast (I had bacon and waffles and Tyler had a plethora of foods lol). We were all packed and checked out pretty early.
We only stopped twice (one pee break and food for Tyler, and then food for me about an hour later). We crossed over in Lansdowne, so we went to the American Duty Free shop and picked up two 26oz rum (one white and one spiced) for $22USD lol
We made the quick ride to Cornwall to get the kids, hung out for a bit and then headed home. We were back in good time (still had like 4 hours before bed). Had a quick fire and let the kids run around outside since it was so nice out. Once we put the kids to bed, our neighbour Bill stopped by, but I wasn't feeling good from eating non-keto for three days, so I just laid in bed and caught up on Teen mom 2 lol Finally fell asleep around midnight.
Sunday we ran a few errands- picked up a few deck boards etc. I was supposed to go to a baby shower, but I was too tired, and had a lot around the house to catch up on. We were outside most of the day, unpacked, did laundry and then our neighbours Jami and TJ and Brin came by. The kids played in the sprinkler, with water guns and water balloons, and then filled their bellies with ice cream sandwiches. They were going to stay for dinner but they headed home to get some work done. I just made some veggies and dip and grilled cheese for the kids (we had eggs and bacon). We were all bathed and in bed pretty early!
Hope you all had a great weekend!
