A letter to my son...

To my beloved, precious little man,

As you approach your fifth month of life on the outside with us, I am amazed at how much you have grown, learned and embraced. I can tell you will be a beam of sunshine in everyone's life who is blessed enough to meet you. I cannot believe we are lucky enough to call you our own. Your daddy and I love you very much.

Things you love:

-Laughing out loud at things you think are silly (buzzing noises, squeaky noises, zerberts, fake coughs, when we call you silly, or when we tell you from across the room that we can see you).

- scooting around on your tummy. You almost have the concept of crawling!

- Bottles, even though you are a slow eater, your face lights up when you hear me mixing one up.

- You love watching me type on the keyboard (you're staring very intensely at my fingers right now)

- You love anything that plays music

- You love when mommy reads you stories

- You love to be rocked and walked around/held

- You love exchanging smiles with people you know, but do not so much like people you don't know very well (you are shy)

- You think it is fun to roll onto your belly everytime I am changing you

- You love standing and "walking" with our help

- You love watching Toopy and Binoo and Mike the Knight

- You love fake yawns

- You love to nap in the car

- You love a nice 9 hour sleep at night (and I love you for that too)

As time goes on and you get older, there are a few things we want you to know.

Life is not an easy thing. There will be times you struggle, times you are confused and feel alone. There will be times you are generally uncertain. Please know that there is no love like a parents love. We will be here through thick and thin, for anything you need. Whether that be a shoulder to cry on, words of advice, an ear to listen or things as simple as a home or a hug. We are two people you can always count on, no matter what.

People will break your heart, or turn out to be different people than you once thought. Do not ever feel like these people are deserving to be in your life. I will teach you not to tease people and that you are not better than anyone else, but at the same time, put your own self worth above anything else. You deserve more than to feel like anything less than the amazing human you are. We are your rocks, the two constants in your life, so you need not worry about us making you feel this way.

I hope to instil a solid moral compass in you. I want you to know the difference between right and wrong. I promise to be there to cheer you on and brag about you for every good thing you choose to do, and to help you get back on the right track and pick up the pieces if you don't. I am your number one fan and cheerleader, never forget that.

I want you to be a commendable man. I want you to treat people with respect, hold the door for them, say please and thank you to people and do good deeds. Good guys ALWAYS finish first, no matter how the saying goes.

I want your life to be bright with fantastic memories of us and the rest of your family. I want you to have the best of everything and the moment you were placed into my arms, I knew you would always come before all else. I will do everything I can to make sure your childhood and forever onward is nothing less than the best.

I want you to get a good education. I want you to know the value of a dollar and I want you to appreciate everything you have, even if you are never in need of anything else. I want you to be handsome but modest, successful but humble and passionate about things you love.

There are so many things I want for you, Garett. It's hard to sum everything up without sounding like my expectations are too high, but the truth is you're perfect, and you will always be perfect to me. And if God ever graces our family with another baby, I just know you will be the best big brother I've ever seen.

Even at 5 months old, I can see the outline of the person you will be. Funny, kind, loving, and smart. You are curious and crave learning new things. I can see your sponge-like mind absorbing things as you listen, or your wandering fingers feel new textures. I cannot wait to hold your hand through the rest of forever :)
