I'm Allowed..
I commented on Facebook last night about how tired I am. My energy level this week is way below normal, and it is all I can do to make it from the moment I open my eyes, until the moment my head hits the pillow each night.
Apparently some people (well one in particular), thinks that because I "have it good" with my job, I should just be happy with that. That because my husband works insanely long hours, that he should be tired, and not me. Excuse me??? You're an idiot.
I want to clear the air here. Yes I work for the Fed. Gov't. Yes, I get a good salary, yes I have wonderful benefits, yes I get a pension and yes my collective agreement says I only have to clock in for 7.5 hours a day. Fine, I have it good. Never once did I argue this. I know I am lucky. But apparently having it "good" makes me lazy and not a hard worker....wrong.
I get to work shortly before 7 everyday, I often don't leave until 3:30 or 4 at the earliest. I carry a work blackberry around, and am therefore reachable at literally any hour of day (and don't demand overtime like I am entitled to, or like some people constantly do--not just talking public sector here...private sector people are also extremely guilty of this). I drive 45 minutes to work and 45 minutes home everyday, with the addition of daycare stops to get the low-down on what my little guy did each day, what he ate, and kiss and scrapes he got through the day.
My day at work is just the beginning. I work hard, fast and efficiently so that I CAN make it out of the office on time. When I get to my boy, I am already tired, like most people after a hard days work. But then, I have to dig deep down and find the energy to chat with him, to play with him, to make dinner for the family, clean up after dinner, lay out items for the following day, make sure we are all bathed for the following day, tidy up the house, get a certain kiddo ready for bed, keep an eye on the work BB, and still pay attention to my husband and listen to how his day went. (Also not negating how hard he works--often 15+ hour days trying to juggle both business right now).
I am a full-time employee, I am a mom, I am a wife, a sister,a daughter, a friend, a taxi service, an entertainer, a healer. Do I have time for your inconsiderate, stupid, un-thought out remarks? No. Am I offended by it? Yes. So shut up.
Anyways. End rant.
I'm in a bad mood. Have a good day everyone :) hah

I do love people that comment things like that...seriously, the hardest job is being a full time worker AND a mom...I would love to stay at home if our budget allowed it, and we both have to work and same as you, we commute in every day and we rush to make daycare pick up times - we don't have time to stop and pick things up so then I have to spend my weekends coming back down to the city to do groceries...SUCKS! Cheer up and ignore idiots!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on this and you know that. Yeah we have it good but that doesn't mean we don't work hard when we are in the office. But of course, because there are slackers in the Government, we are all slackers apparently and that pisses me off. I'd love for "this person" to go to work with us for a day and see the things we put up with...not just the workload but some of the people in the office too. We don't get overtime unless it's pre-approved and it's rarely ever recognized. The work BB thing is annoying too because technically, according to our Collective Agreements, we have the right to refuse them...but if we do, we all know what will happen.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we'll be losing our sick leave soon enough so what the hell happens then when you're sick from running yourself into the ground and you try to save those days for if G is sick or if you're so sick that you can't move? It's annoying when people bash the Government workers and think they have a clue of what we do all day.
