Problems with working in the summer time
As much as I have loved to work in the summer time;
-it means sleeping in a little longer
- traffic is a lot less congested
- less people at work, but more work, so it passes the day faster
- beautiful scenic walks at lunch
- easier to eat healthy at work
I also have my reasons for hating it. The pros are wonderful, but if I could do fun activities all day long with my boy each and everyday, I would.
Yesterday was a great day at work, and at home we decided we are officially gearing up in the real estate market (realtor is coming soon to appraise our house, and based on how the viewing goes tonight, we will decide how quickly our home will be listed). While those things are all well and good, yesterday G got to go strawberry picking (since in the summer it's just him and one other boy most days--the other parents are teachers and pull the kids from daycare in the summer). I want to go strawberry picking and watch his little fingers push through the plants to get that delicious, juicy strawberry he can't wait any longer to sink his teeth into (or smush between his fingers). I want to watch the joy on his face as he realises that the entire field is filled with them, and runs from strawberry to strawberry devouring all pickings. He had so much fun, but those are the things I, as a mommy, want to see and take part in.
*On a side note, have I forgot to mention in a while how much I adore our daycare provider?? She even sent us home a jar of strawberry jam to mark the occassion. God, she is wonderful. I am so lucky to not have a worry in the world while I am at work.*
Other things I love about summer that I miss out by having to go to work is:
TANNING. While I may be too old to do this (and to unavailable to, with a little one who runs around too much outside for me to enjoy the hammock in peace for 2 minutes lol), nothing is more appealing than laying out there on the lounger or hammock, soaking up the sun with a cosmo magazine and a pina colada in hand (like a mini vacation!).
DAY SHOPPING: While I was on maternity leave, I fell in love with this concept. The grocery stores are not even half full--and mostly with other new mommies, or seniors waiting to compliment you and your little one. Retail stores? You have your pick of change room or sales attendant. Parking lots? Forget about walking--you're up front and center. Movie theatres? EMPTY. Restaurants? Sure 2 people can sit at a 10 person booth, no problem. You will never eat cold, mediocre, pre-prepared food ever again.
COOKING/BAKING: When you work all the time, it's all you can do to get through the grind (get ready, work, commute, pick up the kid, cook dinner, clean, bathe, sleep, rinse, repeat). Being off (anytime, not just summer) is great because the house is ALWAYS spotless, dinner is always a 3 course gourmet meal, you somehow find it within yourself to be super mom (but for us working, I guess that's what weekends are for!). There is never a crumb on the carpet, and always fresh baked goods/bread for any snacking cravings.
TIME TO BE WITH THE ONES THAT MATTER: I know I pretty much already stated this when I went on my strawberry field rant, but I just want to hang out with my little boy, my husband and my family all day 'errday.
ONLINE SHOPPING and REDECORATING: Sure I get all the ideas in the world at work. I do some of my best thinking, planning and to-do list making here! But there's nothing like deciding...Hmmmm, today I will paint this--and running out to get paint. Or hmmm I want all new bath towels...and finding the best deals online. Literally anything is at your fingertips at ALL times.
Don't get me wrong. I am lucky. Lucky that I have a flexible career, and a good one with good benefits/pension. I am lucky to have a wonderful, loving husband that will back me up when I just can't face the stove, or pick up G if I do end up getting stuck in grid lock. Lucky to have the food we have, the home we have, and all the material items we could want. Is it too much to ask that I never have to work over a summer, ever again???? lol
Anyways--tonight is the decision maker on how we spend the next 4 months of our life--to be, or not to be? That is the million dollar question.
Have a wonderful day, everyone! :) Happy Thursday!
