Garett's First Dentist Appointment

I was looking at Garetts teeth closely the other day and noticed what looked like a little hole on one of his teeth, so immediately we booked him a dental appointment.

I was already feeling like a bad mom because everyone I spoke with could NOT get over how he was over 3 years old, and had not yet seen the dentist. I just assumed that he would go before he started school, to get into the routine of cleanings, etc--he's a nightly flosser and brushes his teeth 2-3 times a day--in fact, I think he might be a little over zealous in this category. I did want him to get used to his cleanings every 6 months, so we also decided he should head to the office to be introduced to that.

Apparently he talked about how he was going to the dentist all day at daycare. We headed right to the office to meet Tyler (he got to have his cleaning yesterday too--I will go back once the baby is born), and as soon as we pulled in he said "I don't want to go in there". Turns out he was so chatty about the dentist because he was a little leery. I reassured him that  our dentist is a VERY nice lady, and he asked "but will it hurt me?" I promised him it wouldn't hurt, and that he might actually have fun! We called his "Pa" for a little more reassurance, and then daddy arrived and he was all over getting inside.

I think any concerns kind of dissipated more when he saw the lego table--these puppies are his most favourite thing ever.

As a nice touch, the dentist came out and introduced herself to him. He was quite taken with her right from the start. She is a very calming lady, and quite obviously has a way with children. She told him how his daddy has been going to see her since he was small like him, and he thought that was VERY neat. He giggled away at that for a few minutes.
Tyler's hygienist was running a bit behind schedule, so the Doctor brought Garett in, chatted with him about his teeth--he told her all about his game on the ipad where HE is the dentist. She counted his teeth--10 on top and 10 on the bottom. Just perfect :)
She saw the little spot I was asking about and said it's just a small hole--that it's fairly common in kids his age, and not to be worried. It wasn't a cavity or anything, so she showed Garett on his finger how the little buffer thing would feel and he was a little nervous, but let her into his mouth--she must be magic.
She just cleaned out the hole to make sure there was no germy stuff in there, and filled it with a little filler thing that had a little fluoride in it. He was SO amazing and didn't fidget at all, kept his mouth open for her and LOVED when she put the little water gun in his mouth with the suction wand.
Once we were done, he got to pick a sticker and a toothbrush out of the treasure bins, and we ran in to see daddy getting his teeth cleaned for a few minutes. It got pretty boring, so we headed out.
We grabbed a smoothie on the way home as a treat for him being such a good patient. And picked up some dinner. Daddy was home by the time we got back, and we decided to be lazy all night since we were all pretty pooped!

After we ate dinner, we headed upstairs, and I found a new Snoogle pillow on the bed waiting for me as a surprise from Ty. I was excited to not have to go out and get one myself! lol But, par for the course, Garett claimed it as his own for the evening. He made himself right at home, snuggled up inside it and watched cartoons on the ipad.

We got bored of that after a bit, so we finished putting the shelf in G's room together, finally (it's really heavy and such a pain), and organized his toys on there, moved the cubby shelving into the baby's closet, and played in his big boy room for like 2 hours. Soon enough, it was bath time and we relaxed in bed a bit before hitting the hay completely!

Little mister woke up at 5:45 today, wanting to go to the park with Cindy (his daycare provider) and the other kids? Ok...Can it wait until she's open/awake/time to go, bud? haha we got a few cuddles in this morning (about 45 minutes worth!) and then all woke up to get ready to go.

Today is Glucose Tolerance Test day :) Another thing to check off the list. I'm pretty late getting it done, but all good! I welcome the half day today at work, especially since it's supposed to be so nice out this afternoon! It's a little more than half day, but I'll still take it! haha Get here at 7, and I head out around 11:45 for my appointment. Luckily its only the 1 hour test, since I was good with my last pregnancy. So I should have a good hour and a half of alone time to eat something and maybe put a little laundry away! I would like to label a few more things I came across for the sale also.

Hope everyone has a wonderful Tuesday!

  1. This sounds like the perfect trip to the dentist. Dentists are always scary for children and even some adults. Kids can be so picky with strangers. I am glad you have a friendly dentist. I will have to look for a pediatric dentist in a few years for my newborn. I love the pictures you included in this post!

  2. He really is an adorable little guy. I love how when he was in the dentist chair he looks so inquisitive about everything in the room. He is off to a great start, and each visit from here out will get easier as long as he keeps up with his brushing. You really have a great little one there too.

  3. I am glad that your kid had nice dentist visit. Usually we cannot expect such calm visits with kids but my kid also had nice experience with our Torrance dentist. He treated him like a friend during checkups so my kid didn’t feel awkward.
